The group started back in 1990 when Odysseia-In was founded by a team of innovators in love with nature and traveling. The group has been expanding ever since, creating a large structure of two tour operators (Odysseia-In and Zig Zag Holidays) and two non-governmental organizations (Bulgarian Association for Alternative Tourism and Mountains and People Association). The tour operators specialize in incoming special interest tourism while the NGOs focus on consulting and training in the field of sustainable tourism, local development and promotion.

Zig Zag Holidays is a specialist in tailor-made trips for individual tourists and small groups. You can choose from a big variety of outdoor activities, adventure and eco-tourism, cultural and rural life tours. Since 2003 the agency works as an outgoing tour operator as well.

Odysseia-In works in co-operation with leading adventure tour operators from all over the world and handles their groups in Bulgaria.

Our goal is to share our knowledge and love for Bulgarian nature, history and people with our guests while developing Bulgaria as a leading destination for sustainable tourism.

We are recommended by International guidebooks, including the Lonely Planet, Rough Guide, Eyewithness Travel (UK), Guide du Routard and Petit Fute (France), Reise Know-How (Germany), Trotter Guidsen (The Netherlands).

Achievements in tourism:

  • 1992-2003 - launching and promoting tour guiding as a modern profession in Bulgaria
  • 1998-2001 - elaboration of the national Charter “Bulgarian Inn” – a system of quality standards for accommodation in Bed & Breakfasts and Guesthouses
  • 2001-2002 creating the first SWOT analysis for Bulgarian alternative tourism
  • 2002 – publishing 2 series of posters featuring Bulgarian mountains in partnership with the Ministry of Agriculture and Forests
  • 2003 – producing 3 videos and 1 cartoon promoting Bulgaria

Zig Zag Holidays shares the responsibility for protection of Bulgaria’s unique cultural and natural heritage by setting an example of sustainable tourism through our work and project development. Our current projects include reforestation of pine trees in Pirin National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and restoration of “Saint Nicholas” Monastery in Seslavtsi, a medieval masterpiece once part of the Sofia Holy Mountain network of monasteries. The church has some unique examples of early 17th century murals, and by restoring it, we will save a piece of our history and give the local community a chance to develop its economy.
